On the Interpretation of Shortwave Albedo-Transmittance Plots

چکیده
The coefficients of linear regression lines fit to 1D model values of broadband surface absorptance T and top-ofatmosphere albedo " indicate the impact of clouds on atmospheric absorptance a. It is argued here that these coefficients cannot be compared directly to corresponding values for hourly observed data. This is because 1 " T = a for 1D models, but not for hourly observations. A 3D Monte Carlo radiative transfer algorithm and a realistic atmosphere are used to demonstrate that hourly data create an illusion of anomalous absorption by clouds on " vs. T plots. This is because of horizontal transport of radiation and inherently poor sampling of T. It would, however, be safer to compare 1D model regression coefficients to those for at least diurnal mean observations averaged over large grids containing several surface pyranometers.

Quantifying the missing link between forest albedo and productivity in the boreal zone
Albedo and fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR) determine the shortwave radiation balance and productivity of forests. Currently, the physical link between forest albedo and productivity is poorly understood, yet it is crucial for designing optimal forest management strategies for mitigating climate change. We investigated the relationships between boreal forest stru...
متن کاملCanopy-scale relationships between foliar nitrogen and albedo are not observed in leaf reflectance and transmittance within temperate deciduous tree species
Strong positive correlations between the maximum rate of canopy photosynthesis, canopy-averaged foliar nitrogen concentration, and canopy albedo have been shown in previous studies. While leaf-level relationships between photosynthetic capacity and foliar nitrogen are well documented, it is not clear whether leaf-level relationships between solarweighted reflectance and nitrogen underlie the ca...
متن کاملTransmission of Solar Radiation by Clouds over Snow and Ice Surfaces. Part II: Cloud Optical Depth and Shortwave Radiative Forcing from Pyranometer Measurements in the Southern Ocean
Downward solar irradiance at the sea surface, measured on several voyages of an icebreaker in the Southern Ocean, is used to infer transmittance of solar radiation by clouds. Together with surface albedo estimated from coincident hourly sea ice reports, instantaneous cloud radiative forcing and effective cloud optical depth are obtained. Values of “raw cloud transmittance” (trc), the ratio of d...
متن کاملGlobal analysis of radiative forcing from fire-induced shortwave albedo change
Land surface albedo, a key parameter to derive Earth’s surface energy balance, is used in the parameterization of numerical weather prediction, climate monitoring and climate change impact assessments. Changes in albedo due to fire have not been fully investigated on a continental and global scale. The main goal of this study, therefore, is to quantify the changes in instantaneous shortwave alb...
متن کاملRelationship between cloud radiative forcing, cloud fraction and cloud albedo, and new surface-based approach for determining cloud albedo
This paper focuses on three interconnected topics: (1) quantitative relationship between surface shortwave cloud radiative forcing, cloud fraction, and cloud albedo; (2) surface-based approach for measuring cloud albedo; (3) multiscale (diurnal, annual and inter-annual) variations and covariations of surface shortwave cloud radiative forcing, cloud fraction, and cloud albedo. An analytical expr...
